BETS’s sound encapsulates elements of musicians such as Lay Low, Feist, El Perro del Mar and Saint Vincent.  BETS worked with Espinoza and Murray who helped her produce the album.  Recording took place at The Ship studios in Eagle Rock, a haven of everything nautical, where Betsy feels “right at home” despite having no association to the sea!

New Gods Release Debut Album Beloved

New Gods Release Debut LP
Beloved OUT TODAY
23 October 2013

NEW GODS

HYPNOTIC, HYPNAGOGIC

DEBUT LP

BELOVED

OUT TODAY

Emerging from Melbourne, NEW GODS have justified their ironic band name in an entirely un-ironic way.  Their debut LP Beloved takes the best of 90s indie rock gods like Pavement and the Pixies, filtering it through the studio wizardry of Dave Fridmann and the tape-warp hallmarks of hypnagogic pop.  The result is truly unique.  Thematically coherent as it explores vast sonic territory, Beloved is a welcome left-field contender for the best album of the year.

EXPERIENCE BELOVED HERE

This is one of those groups that for me you would have to be in the mood for.  This isn’t one you would rock out to by any means.  This is one that you would put in on a lazy day or hazy day when the weather is dreary.  The group has a good sound, but in some songs the lead singer gets lost in the music and becomes muddy so you can’t quite understand him.  The interface above that they have with the release is really cool for us older listener’s (giving us a little feel of nostalgia).  I’m not sure if today’s crowd, unless they are into music, will appreciate the cassette reference.  The gallery is also a nice touch to give listeners a different experience.

(New York, NY; Columbia Records; October 17, 2013) Los Angeles five-piece The Neighbourhood has premiered a brand new video for “Afraid” today at VEVO.com. The video was directed by ENDS (Zachary Sekuler and Daniel Iglesias, Jr.), who also worked with the band on the video for hit single “Sweater Weather.” Praised by Billboard for its “edgy, subtle hooks,” “Afraid” is the second single from the band’s debut LP I Love You., which was released earlier this year on Columbia Records.

This is a powerful song and video.  When you click over to the video, it will give you warnings that it is explicit and if you have seizures you might not want to view the video.  It is a little depressing, but as April always says, sometimes you need this type of song (paraphrasing of course).  Check it out above and then below, if you like what you hear, you can check out their tour dates.

Julia Weldon releases Careful in the Dark Music Video

JULIA WELDON

PREMIERES NEW VIDEO FOR
“CAREFUL IN THE DARK”

“Careful in the Dark,” is heavy on narrative. Visually resplendent and with costume design reminiscent of the fantastic work in Wes Andersen’s Moonrise Kingdom, it initially explores natural beauty and territory.

At first it seems it’ll be about two lovers’ virgin adventure into uncharted territory. In some sense it is, but that uncharted territory turns out to be riddled with obstacles. Moving from wrestling matches to pillow fights, the video charts the course of a relationship, through its highs and lows. As Julia sings that she is “hopelessly drawn to the battle and the blood,” we see why: the drama is engrossing, and even when it’s bad, it’s intense, full of meaning.

This is a very simple song with a slight folk sound.  As mention above its about relationships and how they have there ups and downs.  The main thing to remember is you have to work on relationships.  Sometimes people take the easy way out, but if you go through those rough patches the relationship grows stronger.  So I like that Julia kept this song simple and told a story with it.  You can check out the video here from Julia’s YouTube page:

The High Wire puts us “Under a Spell” with their Latest Release

THE HIGH WIRE
“UNDER A SPELL”

PREMIERS ON THE BLUE WALRUS ALONGSIDE CROFTS REMIX &
GARNERS PRAISE FROM BBC
“Under A Spell” is a pure pop song. It goes straight into the bloodstream and stays there. A heady mix of 60s folk rock, 90s soul and early noughties pop, where soaring synths, widescreen acoustic guitars and attacking electro rhythms help drive the song towards it’s euphoric conclusion.
With guest vocals from London soul & gospel legend Nicky Brown (Primal Scream, Madonna) and seasoned soul singer Ladonna Harley-Peters (Florence & the Machine, Groove Armada), sitting perfectly alongside those of band members Alexia Hagen & Tim Crompton, it’s no surprise Alice Levine and Phil Taggart jumped at the chance to give the eclectic track a first spin on Radio 1.
“Under the Spell” is a great single to release during the Halloween season.  It has a popish feel to it, but puts in enough strangeness (with the instrumentals and voice work) to give the song a supernatural or otherworldly feel.  With “Crofts Remix” the song takes on a sound more applicable for a club so people can dance to it.  I can see the remixes purpose and appreciate it, but for myself I like the original better.  Be sure to check both out with the links above.
The High Wire are Alexia Hagen, Ross Forrest and Tim Crompton.
Their new album is due out in early 2014.

Metropolis America’s latest Single and Music Video

Metropolis America
Release “A Stolen Heart In A Stolen Car” Video
Indie – Steedog Records

METROPOLIS AMERICA RELEASE VIDEO “A STOLEN HEART IN A STOLEN CAR”   “A Stolen Heart In A Stolen Car” is an ode to the recklessness of youth. It’s about living in the moment, transgressing boundaries, and feeling the euphoria that comes with not giving a fuck.   Its video, perfectly captures the essence of that rebelliousness. Focusing on two girls who have run away from home and rejected the banality of their formal existence, their escape is alive with the feeling of being young and drunk on life, drunk on possibility but also on drama.

The video is directed by Mate Valtr and produced by Brian Sperber and their efforts and production show a clean short film that has the beginning, middle, and end.  These are the types of music videos I appreciate because they tell the story from the song.  Their hard work has paid off by giving Metropolis America a great music video to go with a great song.  Check it out below from Metropolis America’s YouTube channel:

Torgny Releases “Gronn Extra”

T
ørgny

New Single Out Now

Grønn Extra” (Green Extra) is the first single off Torgny’s new album Oil Panic. Somewhere between Broadcast’s “America’s Boy” and Chromeo’s “Needy Girl,” it draws from both electro funk and experimental pop.

Yes it’s catchy, but “Grønn Extra” is uncommonly gritty too, drawing on Torgny’s  dynamic vocal performance and
years of experience in the international hardcore/punk scene.
“Gronn Extra” reminded me of the Electric Pop for the 1980’s to 1990′.  Kind of think of the Beverly Hills Cop sound track and it’s “Axel F Theme” or Miami Vice music that they featured.  Fans from that era will definitely groove to this.  If you are new listeners check it out, you might find yourself grooving to the beat.

“Grønn Extra” is off Torgny’s upcoming LP Oil Panic, out November 8.
