Utah and the 1st Amendment

Comic Book Legal Defense Fund’s site has a report of a coalition the organization has joined.  The coalition is working to have one of Utah’s proposed statues defeated.  The statue is on censoring the Internet and was passed in 2005, but has not been enforced.  It is currently in the courts – Florence v. Shurtleff, No. 05-CV-485 in the United States District Court, District of Utah.  The law “seeks to regulate all Internet speech that some might consider ‘harmful to minors’, including works of visual art, photography, graphic novels, and information about sexual health and the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth”.  Jump of to the site for the full article.

WizKids goes to the Stars

WizKids is planning on releasing Star Trek Fleet Captains gaming set.  However, instead of having characters from the shows on stands they will have starships from the shows.  Your gamers might be interested in this and I bet your patrons that are into Star Trek will definitely be interested in this new product.

Now if American Universities Can Follow Suit

The Kyoto Seika University is now offering a Doctorate degree in Manga Studies.  In 2000, the university began an undergraduate degree in Manga Studies and in 2010 it developed a masters degree in Manga Studies.  This came about in response to the ” internationalization of manga culture, increased public support, and developments in digital media and global contents culture”.  Graduates of this program can become researchers, professors or artists.  It would be nice if we could have this type of degree in U.S. universities as well as an American Comic Book Studies degree or combination of both.
