Space Battleship Yamato Optioned

Skydance Productions has optioned Space Battleship Yamato (Star Blazers) for a live action Hollywood film, according to The Sports Nippon newspaper.  The article went on to state that Christopher McQuarrie will direct the movie after he is finished directing Mission Impossible 5.  This will give Space Battleship Yamato a 2017 release date.  We will have to wait and see if everything advances.  If not we still have the anime series and Japan’s live action movie.

Starblazers 2199

1979 found me in front of a television after school watching a new cartoon.  That cartoon was, unbeknownst to me, the anime Starblazers (Uchu-Senkan Yamato).  I just thought this was a cool space cartoon, being fresh off watching Star Wars, in 1977 which feed into my love for Science Fiction.  Starblazers 2199 is a re-adaptation of Yoshinobu Nishizaki’s original work, from Production I.G. and Voyager Entertainment, and will be available with English and Spanish subtitles.  This is a classic anime that you will want to consider for your anime collection, it would fit nicely right beside the original series.  Check out the short feature below explaining Starblazers 2199 and how it will differ from the original series. Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Trailer

Shochiku, a film distributor, began streaming a trailer for Space Battleship Yamato 2199 (or Star Blazers to a large group of fans).  Shochiku has distributing this anime series as a group of movies and is releasing the sixth movie June 15 entitled, Totatsu! Dai Magellan (Arrival! The Large Magellanic Cloud).  Hopefully when all is said and done this remake will make its way to the North American market, because Star Blazers is still recognizable by many anime fans.  Thanks to AnimeNews Network for the heads up.

Live-Action Star Blazers

Librarians keep your ears to the ground about a possible Star Blazers live-action movie from Skydance Productions which, helped with the production of True Grit.  They are currently in talks to obtain the rights at this time.  Anime News Network’s site (link below)  also mentions that there was a live-action Japanese movie of Star Blazers released this past December.  So you might check out some of your international film distributors to see if they have this title.
