I have posted before about the Diver City Tokyo Plaza, but I wanted to do so again. If you happen to be traveling to Tokyo and love the Gundam franchise Diver City Tokyo Plaza is a stop you will definitely want to visit. If you can’t Ken Ikuhara-Gross has posted several pictures and brief history of the site on animenewsnetwork.com. Above are three of the images he posted in his article. Their are several more and will make you want to make a trip to see the Plaza. On the outside of the Plaza is a life size RX-78-2 Gundam (which is the first picture above) and in the plaza itself is a cafe and memorabilia shop. The 7th floor houses two museums, another gift shop and a Strict-G clothing store. The latest Gundam title is Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans and is already showing in Japan. With other Gundam properties coming to North America hopefully this one will arrive eventually as well. Check out the short TV add that is airing for the show in Japan:
The Japanese Retailers seem to have the coolest connections than anywhere else. The 7 Eleven’s in Japan has teamed up with Bandai again for a store promotional. Starting mid-January the stores will begin selling an exclusive Gundam model kit. Which is pictured above. If we could get our stores to do promotionals like this it would be really cool. The Char Auris that was debuted last year as a custom vehicle may now come to market. Toyota is looking the bring the Char Auris hatchback to market this year and is doing an additional Gundam crossover by saying it is the product of Toyota teaming up with Zeonic Company, which is a fictional Gundam company from the series. I have to admit it looks kind of cool.
Since December has arrived I thought this was an appropriate video to show. Thanks to “darwinfish105” for posting the public unveiling of the Christmas lights on the life-size Gundam and entry way into the musuem in Diver City on YouTube. The display is slated to run until Christmas day.
To go along with the two Gundam Cafe’s, located in Akihabara and Odaiba, a third Gundam Cafe is scheduled to open in Tokyo Station. The projected opening date is December 20th. The cafe will have the same menu as the other two cafe’s, to include Jaburo Coffee and Haro Latte Milk. The cafe will have Gundam products that will include the two pictured items above, a petit glass and rubber coaster. So if you are in the area of one of these cafe’s pay them a visit and support the new one when it opens. It would be another fun stop during your travels.

Something you wouldn’t normally see, but is really cool. For the “29th National Urban Greenery Fair Tokyo” a life-size topiary bust of a Gundam was made. It is on display at the Diver City Tokyo Plaza next to the life-size Gundam statue. The display will be their from September 29 through October 28. So if you are in the area be sure to check it out. The Japanese arm of Unilever is having a promo were exclusive super deformed Gundam figures will be packaged with AXE Fragrance Body Spray and Body Soap. The promotional will start September 13 and will continue while supplies last. Japan just has some cool promotional tie-ins, that’s all their is to it.
Another cool tie-in to a licensed property. I do tend to get the soft drink cans that I like with tie-ins, but not all. However, this tie-in I wish was here in the United States. I’ve always been a Gundam fan and the artwork on these cans look very nice. If I knew someone in Japan near the Gundam Front Toyko entertainment Complex I would see if they would get me a set of empty cans for my collection. Japan just has some very cool tie-ins that I wish we could have more of in the States. These cans are being done by SUNTORY Foods International with Pepsi and will go on sell August 7.
