Busy Week

This has been a busy week.  I had a business retreat this week so I was unable to post anything.  However, the very next post will be a ComicPop Visits.  The crew was able to visit with the founder of Free Comic Book Day, Joe Field.  The upcoming podcast post will be part 1 of our visit and then Monday morning I will post part 2 of the visit.  Everyone enjoy the week end – Richard

Free Comic Book Day

Remember that this weekend, May 4, is Free Comic Book Day.  So you can go see Iron Man 3 on Friday night and then Saturday morning go to your participating comic book stores, book stores, and libraries for free comic books!  I hope everyone was able to get all of their stock in for the 4th.  We have ours in thanks to Prairie Dog Comics, in Wichita, for ordering them for us and we have some extra book marks, provided by Prairie Dog Comics, and graphic novel give aways for those that attend.  Our display case in the library has a display of die-cast cars that are comic book themed that people can view as well.  Have fun everyone!

Are You Ready for Free Comic Book Day

Are you ready for May 4.  That’s this year date for Free Comic Book Day.  Be sure to stop by your local comic shop, book dealer and even library that are supporting the Free Comic Book Day.  Not every book store or library is participating so check with your local library and if this is a program you would like to see in your library let the librarian know so they can be ready for 2014.  Check out the Thomas Jane video below in support of Free Comic Book Day.

Don’t Forget About Free Comic Book Day

Free Comic Book Day is fast approaching.  I hope your library has ordered in an allotment from your local comic book store.  We have the majority of ours ready.  If you don’t remember the date for Free Comic Book Day is the first Saturday in May, which is May 5 this year.  Hope everyone has a great time with it and helps promote the comic book medium.

News from NYCC on FCBD

ICv2 is reporting that Diamond Comics Distributors and a variety of comic book publishers are considering making another Free Comic Book Day event during a calendar year.  Free Comic Book Day is held the first Saturday of every May, however discussion is being done over having a second Free Comic Book Day for Halloween.  If they can get everything worked out Diamond Comics is shotting for a 2012 start date for the second Free Comic Book Day Event.

Tips and Tricks Ep. 5

Try to get your local community involved by having display shows.  Most communities have collectors that live there.  If you have a patron that collects comic book/manga related items you could ask them to put on a day show.  If you can’t think of a patron that collects anything you can ask around and possibly find someone within your community, from another person, to put on a display.  By having someone outside of your library’s patronage put on a show, you could possibly gain patronage from that person and if he talks to other people they might come in and start using the library.

When you approach them he or she might be a little hesitant, but be persistent.  Most collectors love to show off their collection whenever they can.  You can have them come in early to set up and then have them stay if they can, to answer questions about their collection.  They could then take it down at the end of the day.  If they can’t stay during the day, reassure him or her that the collection will be protected.

The library could have a give away for the show as well that could be drawn for at the end of the showing.  You might even get a donation from the person who owns the display if they have any duplicate collectibles to use as a give away.

This show could be held at anytime of the year.  If you have multiple people that have collections you could do multiple day shows.  For instance, one person could just do American comic books, another could be into Japanese manga, or they might collect a specific character.  One of the best days a library could have this would be on Free Comic Book Day.  You can have patrons visit the show and then at the end of the room as they leave give out one or two free comic books.

Free Comic Book Day…This Weekend!

Don’t forget that Free Comic Book Day is this weekend.  If your library isn’t participating, let your patrons know that they can go to their local comic shop and possibly book stores.  I know Hastings in our area participates in Free Comic Book Day.
