We are just having fun reviewing and discussing comic books, graphic novels, manga, anime/animation, music and movies that we have recently read, listened to or watched.
In 2012 Warner Bros. Japan is planning on the debut of a live action movie of Nobuhiro Watsuki’s Rurouni Kenshin. The movie will star Takeru Satoh as Kenshin. The company is hoping this will become a series of movies if it proves popular enough. Hopefully when this finishes its run the Blu-Ray and/or DVD will be available for the North American market. AnimeNews Network’s site says that a June flyer for Kadokawa Shoten’s Kadokawa Bunko imprint has announced that a film based on Hiro Arikawa’s Library War (Toshokan Senso) light novels is in the beginning stages. As with any movie in the beginning stages it could fall apart or make it to the theaters. Hopefully this will make it to the theaters and then be made available to the North American market to purchase in Blu-Ray and DVD formats.

If your patrons live in the Tokyo, Japan area or you have patrons that will be visiting Tokyo in the very near future and they are into anime and manga you might pass along this information. To celebrate the Fullmetal Allchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos movie Namco Ninja Town, starting June 25 and running through July 24, will feature 23 deserts based on the film. Ninja Town is an indoor theme park in Tokyo’s Ikebukuro ward. Above are three of the deserts: 1st – “Alphonse Ice Cream”; 2nd – “Flame Burger Set”; and 3rd – “Fluffy Fluffy Xiao Mei. The Kyoto Seika University is now offering a Doctorate degree in Manga Studies. In 2000, the university began an undergraduate degree in Manga Studies and in 2010 it developed a masters degree in Manga Studies. This came about in response to the ” internationalization of manga culture, increased public support, and developments in digital media and global contents culture”. Graduates of this program can become researchers, professors or artists. It would be nice if we could have this type of degree in U.S. universities as well as an American Comic Book Studies degree or combination of both.

Kenjirou Hata’s Hayate the Combat Butler is getting a Taiwanese adaptation to premier June 19. Hopefully this will eventually become available to purchase in the U.S. market when it is put on DVD. ICv2’s site, linked below, has an article about the titles that TokyoPop had rights to produce. TokyoPop announced that rights of the manga titles they had will revert back to the Japanese owners. This will allow the owners to try to find another U.S. publishing house or the series will stop publication in the U.S. Hopefully the titles will find a home somewhere since Viz, Yen Press, Del Rey, Dark Horse and other smaller publshers that could pick up some of these titles.

Even though it is in Japanese you patrons will still be interested in watching the trailer. Why? Because as popular as Fullmetal Alchemist is, this movie will eventually make it to the U.S. market for sell. And then libraries will want to pick it up for their Anime Collections.
